REVISED VERSION, March 2025
The Bluegrass Music Association of Maine was formed out of the love for bluegrass music. We are committed to promoting and supporting musicians in Maine that are helping to preserve and grow this important American musical genre, and to provide opportunities for audiences to come together to enjoy this music that we all love.
The roots of bluegrass are found in folk, mountain, and old-time string band music, as well as in gospel and blues music. Early entertainers such as the Monroe Brothers, Blue Sky Boys, Delmore Brothers, J.E. & Wade Mainer, Clayton McMichen and many others helped to lay the foundation and create the atmosphere that allowed bluegrass music to be born.
Bluegrass music was stylized and expanded by pioneers such as Bill Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, Flatt & Scruggs, Jim & Jesse, Reno & Smiley, the Osborne Brothers, Mac Wiseman, Jimmy Martin, the Country Gentlemen, and the Lilley Brothers & Don Stover.
These pioneers created a strong foundation for bluegrass music that has continued to be built upon by generations of musicians and bands, from J.D. Crowe & The New South and the Seldom Scene to Newgrass Revival and John Hartford. In recent years, musicians such as Billy Strings, Michael Cleveland, Sierra Hull and Molly Tuttle have contributed to the ongoing evolution of this wholly unique art form.
We intend to preserve, promote, and maintain the integrity and roots of this great acoustic string band music called bluegrass here in the state of Maine.
This association is a member of the International Bluegrass Music Association
